Visiting Lynchburg Tennessee, home to Jack Daniel’s, is one of those small towns which basically sits around the courthouse square. Most businesses are situated around it as well so park your car and walk around the town. Most have heard of Lynchburg as the place Jack Daniel’s is made, and it’s the only place. Every drop of Jack Daniel’s is bottled in and shipped from Lynchburg.
A funny fact about Moore County, it’s a dry county, which means the sale of alcohol is illegal, except for the White Rabbit Bottle Shop at Jack Daniel’s Distillery. So, if you want your souvenir bottle of JD, get it there. Sometimes they will have a new flavor not yet distributed worldwide.
Early History of Lynchburg
How Lynchburg was named is still a bit of a mystery, but it’s believed to be named after Judge Lynch who established a ferry service across the James River in 1757. Lynch’s Ferry grew around this and officially chartered in 1786.
After the Civil War, many towns took years to recover with Lynchburg becoming the county seat in 1873. As early as the 1880s, the town had several distilleries, with Jack Daniel’s being the second-most productive. With prohibition enforced in 1909, the distillery had to close; it then re-opened in 1937 after prohibition ended in 1933.

Of course, the main attraction in Lynchburg is the Jack Daniel’s Distillery. Over 300,000 peope visit Jack Daniel’s Distillery each year, from all 50 states and numerous foreign countries. That brings a lot of revenue to the city and county.
After the tour and tasting, most will visit the historic town square to shop, dine, and explore all the stores. You will find local crafts, clothing, and souvenirs, but no Jack Daniel’s whiskey.
Maybe you can’t buy a bottle of Jack Daniel’s at a local shop, but make sure you try Lynchburg Cake and Candy for treats flavored with the local flavor.
The Lynchburg Hardware & General Store is the official gift shop for the distillery, but remember, you can’t buy and alcoholic products there.
If you ask anyone where to eat in Lynchburg, the overwhelming answer will be – Miss Mary Bobo’s Restaurant. As a former boarding house, you get home cooking served family style. Make sure you make a reservation. They are closed on Sundays.
Company Distilling – Take a tour and tasting
The Old Jail Museum – tours available, learning about the history of local law enforcement.
The historic downtown area is named to the National Registry of Historic Places.
A few other popular shopping spots include a Harley Davidson store and Lodge Cast Iron.
Stop by the Visitor Center
The Lynchburg Visitor Center is also the Tennessee Whiskey Trailhead and Welcome Center. Make sure if you don’t get your Whiskey Trail Passport stamped at the distillery, you can hear. You can also pick up souvenirs here as well. This is located across the street from the distillery but there are shuttles to take you all around town.
I love finding unique things like this vintage type toilet. Kids would probably get a kick out of pulling the handle.
Events Around Lynchburg
One of the biggest events held in the area is the Jack Daniels World Championship Invitational BBQ, drawing thousands for this competition each year.
A couple more events held annually include a Frontier Days Festival and Lynchburg Musc Fest.
You are ony about 15 miles from beautiful Tims Ford State Park.
A Tennessee Sports Connection
One of the most famous coaches in the Tennessee football era, Johnny Majors, was raised in Lynchburg. He led the team to a three SEC championships and the University of Pittsburg to one national championship.
Make Plans for Visiting Lynchburg
You can make a visit to Lynchburg as a great day trip. Make sure to make your reservations for a tour and tasting at Jack Daniel’s and lunch at Miss Mary Bobo’s ahead of time.
One last thing, visit the local cemetary where Jack Daniel and many of his family is buried.
It’s rumored the two chairs were place there for suitors of Jack would visit, altough he never married.
