Summer is here and this Ice Cream Soda with Homemade Chocolate Syrup is calling your name! It’s literally like a dessert and a drink, all in one! 

If you’re a fan of ice cream floats, you’re going to be over the moon for this sweet drink! The combination of the ice cream and the syrup will have you drinking this to the very last drop. The first time that I made this drink recipe, I was instantly transported back to my childhood where I was at the local diner sipping on a float…It’s amazing how one sip takes my tastebuds on a journey to a memory in my life that I love and treasure.

Ice Cream Soda with Homemade Chocolate Syrup

Ingredients to make Ice Cream Sodas

Chocolate Syrup Ingredients:

  • ½ c. water
  • ½ c. white sugar
  • 1/3 c. unsweetened dark cocoa powder
  • 1 t. real vanilla extract
  • 1/8 t. salt

Soda Ingredients:

  • 1 c. club soda
  • 3 c. vanilla ice cream 

For Garnish:

  • Whipped cream
  • Mini-chocolate chips
  • Maraschino cherries

How to make Ice Cream Soda

  1. To prepare the chocolate syrup, combine the water, sugar, cocoa powder, vanilla extract, and salt in a small skillet set over medium heat. Whisk vigorously until the sugar is dissolved and the cocoa powder is thoroughly incorporated into the mixture, approximately 2-3 minutes. Remove from heat.  
  2. Add a large spoonful of chocolate syrup to each serving glass and top with enough club soda to fill each glass halfway. Divide the ice cream between the glasses and top with additional chocolate syrup.  
  3. To serve, top each ice cream soda with a generous amount of whipped cream, mini-chocolate chips, and a maraschino cherry. Enjoy!

Tips For Changing Up The Flavor of Ice Cream Floats

Even though this recipe is super simple, it’s still easy to change up as well. Keep in mind that if you want to change up how this ice cream soda tastes, you can easily make that happen! 

All you have to do is change up the type of ice cream that you use. This means that you can easily use a different flavor of ice cream each and every time that you make this simple ice cream soda recipe. 

This recipe also uses club soda but again, if you want to change up the type of soda that you’re using, you can easily change up the flavor fast that way, too. 

There are so many options that you can leave this recipe as it is or alter the flavor to fit your needs! 

Fun Topping Ideas for Ice Cream Floats

It’s no secret that toppings are always a good idea. You can also let each person add on whatever toppings that they want to add on, without having to use up a ton of effort to do so.
