What type of apples are best for apple crisp?

The secret of ensuring this baked cinnamon apple crisp tastes delightful is using great apples, but those made for baking. Some of the best apples you can use for apple crisp include any that will provide both a sweet and tart flavor. Apples that stay firm are another thing to look for when selecting which apples to use in this apple crisp recipe. I suggest you opt for Granny Smith, Rome Beauty, or perhaps the popular baking apple, MacIntosh apples.

Plenty of bakers have opted to combine the sweet and tart flavor of a Granny Smith with Honey Crisp apples. Whatever variety of apple you choose to use for this homemade apple crisp recipe, just make sure you have 6 large apples that are sliced, peeled and cored.

What is the difference between apple crisp and crumble?

I’ve seen many people confuse apple crisp with apple crumble. There is a difference between these two homemade apple recipes. Apple crisp has a less dense topping than an apple crumble will have. Ultimately that’s the main difference between apple crisp and crumble. Apple crumble is typically a dish that’s baked with fresh apples, and has a streusel like topping. The topping is made of flour and sugar with the occasional addition of nuts.

My homemade baked cinnamon apple crisp topping is made with old-fashioned rolled oats, flour, almonds, honey, and unsalted butter.

How do you store leftover apple crisp?

The best way to store leftover apple crisp is in the refrigerator. You’ll want to bring the apple crisp to room temperature and dab it with a paper towel to remove condensation. Cover the apple crisp with aluminum foil and place it in an airtight container, such as a pie container with a lid. To reheat leftover apple crisp you’ll preheat your oven to 350 degrees F and allow your leftovers to bake for approximately 15 minutes.

Should I refrigerate cooked apple crisp?

This homemade apple crisp recipe can be enjoyed warm or cold. You may refrigerate any leftover crisp in an airtight container. The topping and filling of a homemade apple crisp won’t do well at room temperature for longer than a few hours. You can store cooked apple crisp in the refrigerator for approximately 3 to 4 days.

Directions to Make Baked Cinnamon Apple Crisp

Place top oven rack in the center position and pre-heat oven to 350°F. Grease an 8” x 8” baking dish and set aside.

Place apples in a large non-reactive bowl and toss with fresh lemon juice. Add maple syrup, apple juice, cinnamon, allspice, thyme leaves, and salt. Toss to combine and set aside.

Combine topping ingredients in a separate bowl and stir until oats are thoroughly coated and all ingredients are well combined. Set aside.

Pour apple mixture into prepared baking dish and spread into an even layer. Spread the topping evenly across the top in a uniform layer, as well.

Place into pre-heated oven and bake for 30 minutes. If the top layer is nicely browned, cover dish loosely with aluminum foil to prevent over-browning. Continue baking for another 15-20 minutes or until the apple crisp is nice and bubbling. Remove from oven and set aside to cool for 5-10 minutes.

Serve warm with some vanilla bean iced cream or freshly whipped cream, if desired. Enjoy!
