The Nina & Pinta – Discovering the Ships That Discovered the New World

Sharing is caring!

The Nina & Pinta is the only place to fully immerse yourself in the ships that discovered the New World. In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue. We all know the rhyme. Now you can get to know two of the three ships that set sail on a quest to reach India but found the Americas instead โ€“ the Nina and the Pinta.

My first impression was how small the ships are.  The Pinta replica is even a bit larger than the actual ships.  I think about my time on a cruise ship, so I donโ€™t think I would be booking a cruise on one of these ships.

About The Nina & Pinta

The Nina & Pinta is a historical experience like no other. This program offered by Sanger Ships LLC features the most historically accurate Nina in the world and a replica of the Pinta that is also historically accurate in every way except its size โ€“ being made larger than the true Pinta for easier exploration and viewing.

Dubbed โ€œThe Sailing Museumโ€, this pair of ships set sail and dock in various ports all over the Western Hemisphere to give visitors all over that area of the globe to see what the ships and lives of these historic explorers were really like.

The Nina is a fully historically accurate recreation of the fabled Nina on which Columbus sailed during his three voyages of discovery. Recently built in Brazil, the newly added Pinta is also historically accurate to the period, however, itโ€™s been built to larger specifications to allow visitors to see more of the ship and has a air conditioned main cabin below with seating.

You can see how the Nina was guided with only the tiller.

Only receiving funding from government agencies, private foundations, and the fees paid to tour the ships, this company is committed to the spirit of history and telling the story of these iconic ships, not simply making money. That can be felt by visitors as they tour these ships lovingly crafted to replicate the full experience of sailing during the 1400s.

Touring the Nina and Pinta

Visitors can choose between a self-guided or guided tour option. Self-guided tours are for individuals and families who arrive during opening hours and pay their fee to explore the ships. Guided tours offer more insight into the ships and the sailors who manned them. However, these tours are only offered to groups of 15 or more guests who have registered for such a tour. These guided tours are perfect for history buffs or student groups.

The crew would sleep on the deck because the lower deck was full of cargo and food.

The current crew does have sleeping quarters downstairs

The Nina & Pinta now travels up to 100 miles off the coastline, which surprised me
