Slow Cooker Beef Back Ribs

This is a delicious homemade beef back ribs slow-cooked to perfection for eight hours on low. The flavorful blend of seasonings will ensure your beef back ribs have a blast of BBQ flavor with every bite.

What is a beef back rib?

Beef back ribs are usually the bones that a rib roast or rib-eye steaks come on. Beef back ribs don’t have a lot of meat on them and are generally seen in abundance during the holiday season.  They are almost the same version of of a pork baby back ribs. 

Are beef ribs and short ribs the same?

Beef back ribs refer to beef spare ribs and short ribs are beef ribs that are taken from the plate cuts. Beef back ribs are a longer cut and used for grilling more often than short ribs are.

This recipe uses beef back ribs with olive oil, salt, garlic powder, a large shallot, beef broth, strained tomatoes, chipotle powder, oregano, real maple syrup, and parsley.

Can you stack ribs in a slow cooker?

Yes, you can stack ribs in a slow cooker. For my slow cooker beef back ribs, you’ll brown the beef back ribs, and place them in the slow cooker. Be sure to place your BBQ seasoning in between each layer of beef back ribs before your entire stack of ribs has been placed in the slow cooker.

What should I serve with beef ribs?

Many sides can be served with beef ribs. You may want to make some garlic mashed potatoes, roasted asparagus, or steamed broccoli to serve with your slow cooker beef back ribs.

How do you tenderize beef ribs?

You don’t have to tenderize beef ribs for this slow cooker recipe, as your beef back ribs will become juicy and tender as they slow cook to perfection in your slow cooker.

If you’re opting to grill beef back ribs then you can wrap the ribs in aluminum foil with seasoning then cook the beef back ribs as per normal time. This will allow the juices to tenderize your beef ribs as they grill to completion.

These beef back ribs will work well as an excellent meal idea for a backyard BBQ, special event, or family mealtime. As your beef back ribs slow cook for eight hours on low or four hours on high, you’ll start to smell the delicious scent of BBQ flavors. Once the ribs are done slow cooking, you may serve them with your favorite sides for beef back ribs.

Slow Cooker Beef Back Ribs

Ingredients: 

  • 3 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil, divided
  • 3 lbs. beef back ribs
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • Sea salt, to taste
  • 1 large shallot, chopped
  • ½ C beef broth
  • ¾ C strained tomatoes
  • ¼ tsp chipotle powder
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1½ Tbsp real maple syrup
  • 2 Tbsp fresh parsley, finely chopped

Directions: 

  1. Heat one tablespoon olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat and season the ribs with the garlic powder and salt.
  2. Add half of the seasoned ribs to the hot skillet. Brown the ribs, approximately 2-3 minutes per side. Once browned, transfer ribs from the skillet to a platter. Repeat process with the remaining ribs and an additional tablespoon of olive oil. Transfer the second batch of ribs to the platter once browned.
  3. Pour remaining oil into the skillet and add the shallot. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the shallot softens and develops some color, approximately 3-4 minutes.
  4. Deglaze the skillet by pouring in the beef broth and gently scraping the bottom of the skillet with a spatula to incorporate the flavorful brown bits into the liquid.
  5. Add the strained tomatoes, chipotle powder, dried oregano, and maple syrup to the skillet. Season with additional salt if desired, and stir to combine. Cook, stirring frequently, for 1-2 minutes or until the sauce is heated through.
  6. Transfer the browned ribs to a 6 quart or larger slow cooker crock and top with the tomato sauce mixture. Cover and cook on high for 4 hours or on low for 8 hours.
  7. When cook time is complete, remove the lid and serve immediately with mashed potatoes or your choice of sides. Spoon some of the sauce over the ribs and garnish with fresh parsley before serving. Enjoy!
