Homemade Peach Cobbler With Simple Crust
Who loves Peach Cobbler? This Homemade Peach Cobbler dessert just screams summertime and ripe peaches. Itโs one of those tastes that takes me right back to my childhood, sitting at my great auntโs kitchen table. If Iโm craving this when good peaches arenโt available, frozen, sliced peaches work great too. Just thaw and slice.
Apple Pie might be All-American, but I probably love peach cobbler as much as I do apple pie. These are great for any type of dinner, or maybe an upcoming cookout or get-together.
This is one of our favorite peach desserts to make and I have a feeling that after making and eating, it just might be yours as well.
When it comes to making a dessert recipe, people tend to forget about the cobblers. So many people do pies and cakes, but cobblers are one of the easiest desserts that you can make. Plus, they just taste so great, too!
What is the difference between a cobbler and a pie?
While they may appear similar, the difference between the two is the crust. Pies will have a bottom crust and sometimes one on the top, while cobblers are only going to have a crust on the top.
A great reason to make a cobbler instead of the pie is many donโt like making pie crust (hand raised).
Why is a cobbler called a cobbler?
I wondered this as well and could never really find a certain answer. The guess is that it might have something to do with the fact that back in the day they might have been named after wooden bowls that could have been used in the kitchen.
Can you use different types of fruit in a cobbler dessert?
You bet! This is why we love them. Peach is one of the best, but you can also do cherry, apple, pear, and the list goes on and on. Also blackberry is also at the top of my list.
Homemade Peach Cobbler
Below youโll find the list of ingredients needed to make this simple peach cobbler dessert.
Filling Ingredients:
- 8 large, ripe peaches, pitted and chopped
- 1/3 C white sugar
- 2 Tbsp fresh lemon juice
- 2 tsp all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp kosher salt
- 1 tsp nutmeg
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp real vanilla extract
- 1/4 C packed brown sugar
Topping Ingredients:
- 1 C all-purpose flour
- 3/4 C sugar, divided
- 1 tsp kosher salt
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/4 C heavy cream
- 1/4 C water
- 8 Tbsp unsalted butter, very well chilled
- 1 egg white, beaten with water added
Optional toppings โ serve with Whipped cream or ice cream
Directions to make Peach Cobbler
Place the top oven rack in the center position and pre-heat oven to 400ยฐF.
Add peaches, sugar, lemon juice, flour, salt, nutmeg, cinnamon, and vanilla extract to a large bowl and toss to combine.
Transfer to a greased 8โณ x 8โณ baking pan and spread into an even layer. Sprinkle brown sugar on top of the peach mixture before placing the pan in a pre-heated oven. Bake for 10 minutes.
Add flour, 1/2 cup sugar, salt, and baking powder to a different bowl and stir to combine. Chop chilled butter into very small pieces with a sharp knife. Add to bowl and combine with dry ingredients with your fingers until small pebble-sized pieces are formed.
Add heavy cream and water to the flour mixture and stir with a fork until all the dry ingredients are moist and somewhat sticky. Do not overwork the dough.
Remove baking pan from oven and carefully spoon dough over the top, making sure the dough is the same thickness throughout. Leave spaces in between, as pictured, for a more rustic look.
Return to oven and bake for another 10 โ 15 minutes, or until the topping begins to brown. Remove from oven and brush the top with the egg white wash and sprinkle remaining sugar on top.
Return to oven to finish baking, another 10 โ 15 minutes. Remove from the oven when the top is golden brown.
Allow pan to cool slightly before serving on its own or topped with whipped cream or ice cream. Enjoy!
