The Fallen Five – A Day Chattanooga Won’t Forget

Sharing is caring!

With so many life changing events, many will say “I remember where I was” when something happens.  That is certainly the case when Chattanooga came under attack by a local guy who went off the rails with foreign terrorism ideas.  July 15, 2015 was a day I and many will  never.

Chattanooga hasn’t forgotten that day or the lives which were touched and impacted in so many ways.

Fallen Five Wreath of Honor Memorial

This was completed in 2019 at the Chattanooga Riverwalk, located near one of the shooting sites.

The memorial is a circular plaza with a granite bench in the center.

The five limestone pillars represent each of the Fallen Five:  Gunnery Sergeant Thomas Sullivan, Sergeant Carson Holmquist, Lance Corporal Squire Skip Wells, Staff Sergeant David Wyatt, and Navy Petty Officer Second Class Randall Smith.  Each has a tribute on the pillars.

The wreath, which are traditionally round, represents continuity and unity, of not only the Fallen Five, but the community who came together to fund the building of this memorial.

You can read words and phrases in the wreath such as God Bless, Forever in our Hearts, Semper Fidelis, God Bless the USA, Fallen Heroes, and Thank You for Your Service.  These were chosen to commemorate the feelings of the community.

You can find it at the Tennessee Riverwalk near the Hubert Fry Center and Shelter #4.

Fallen Five Mural

This is located on McCallie Avenue, a very busy street in the Chattanooga area, so it’s seen by hundreds each day.

The tenth anniversary is this week.  It’s hard to believe it’s been 10 years.

To the Fallen Five, gone way too soon, but never forgotten.

Do you have any stories or remember this?
